Welcome to edition eleven of Bontempi Radio Köln. 57 minutes in your own personal headphone space - wherever that may be. This one is a little bit dark. A yang to the last one's ambient ying. And a birthday edition too! Is it really a year+ since I first set up a feedburner account and was wowed at the potential of sending several mix-tapes to friends at once?

Bontempi Radio Köln: Edition 10 | Adrift on Moonbase Alpha

Image of artwork for Bontempi Radio Köln Edition TenAdrift on Moonbase Alpha

Welcome to edition ten of Bontempi Radio Köln. 45 minutes in your own personal headphone space - wherever that may be.
This is a special retro edition; Found whilst rooting through a box of cassettes (yes I still have some) I unearthed this pre-Bontempi mix I made around about 1994 or 95 judging by the tunes on it. Global Communication, FSOL, Bandulu, MLO...mmm

No Ableton back then, not even laptops for brassic students, so this is strictly 'old-skool' with the mix done with a combination of 2 mismatched decks, a cruddy vari-speed 4-track tape machine, a CD player and a VCR all hooked up via a cheapo 4 channel mixer on the dining room at home during the summer break. No luxury of post production edits or timestretching then - it was a one take deal and after dusting off the TDK and listening back I was pleasantly surprised with this (most tapes used to mess up at about the 37 minute mark) so I thought y'all might like to hear it. So lean back, turn on the Dolby noise reduction and enjoy! And if anyone can identify the dubby one near the end - I think it's the Original Rockers - and mail me with the title I'll despatch them a Milky Way bar post haste.

Image of artwork for Bontempi Radio Köln Edition NineTiger Mustard

Welcome to edition nine of Bontempi Radio Köln. 70+ minutes in your own personal headphone space - wherever that may be. I would say relaxing, but this is probably one of the most bass-heavy podcasts thus far. Lots of freestylin' towards the end. Hope you enjoy - my feelers have been out finding the best music, best *harmonic* mixing and most deja-vu inducing snippets of sampled fun iced-gems can buy. Again - sorry for the delay getting this out. I really should stop saying that it's fortnightly as that's patently not true.

Bontempi Radio Köln: Edition 08 | Bubble & Squeak

Image of artwork for Bontempi Radio Köln Edition EightAs in ‘mixed bag of leftovers’

Welcome to edition eight of Bontempi Radio Köln. A relaxing hour in your own personal headphone space I hope. Apologies to fans for the delay; reading earlier posts you may have noticed I was gadabout recently and despite original plans to podcast from the train I was far happier with my nose jammed against the glass of a railway carriage window picking up inspiration than fannying about in Ableton annoying everyone with my endless tinny high-hat loops.

This Bontempi’s a bit of a mixed bag - hence the name, but has some of my all time faves on it including the untouchably great Spooky mixes of 'Water from a vine leaf' from back-in-the-day. There's some nice soundtrack Bambient stuff, some Alvin Lucier (for those who've read 'Words and Music' by Paul Morley) and a healthy slab of silly samples. Let's face it - where else could you get to hear the theme music to ‘Rockliffe’s Babies’ as well as Tom Baker swearing like a fishwife? Where I ask you? ;)

This is a special edition of sorts as it is the first podcast brought to you in Uncle-o-Ramic Sound. Yep - Yesterday morning Baby Ellen was born during a lightning storm and I am now an uncle. I’m *very excited* at the prospect of meeting her along with her fab mum and dad tomorrow. Congrats guys! And this one's for you Ellen!

Listen here or subscribe via iTunes by clicking the post-title or the Podcast link in the right-hand column I've had some feed problems with Blogger so some existing listeners may need to unsubscribe and then resubscribe in iTunes for the new edition to come down the line properly

Those of you without cloth ears may notice a small improvement in sound quality - I've switched to Garageband to do the final mastering and though it's CaptainSLOW at spitting out the final file, it now comes to you in a gloriously crispy 192Kbps AAC format. Which is nice when played loud. So pull up an office chair, sofa, cross trainer, car seat, train seat, bike saddle or whatever it is you sit on to listen to these, jack in your phones and enjoy!

Please mail with requests or ideas for themes or even to lavish your undying love for my aural travails. I'd love to know who you are, what you like and where you listen to the show. I thrive on feedback! (Sorry Ben—I haven't found a suitable spot for your request yet - maybe in the next one yeah?)

Bontempi Radio Köln: Edition 07 | Music to ride trains by

Image of artwork for Bontempi Radio Köln Edition SevenPishh-ti-coof... Pishh-ti-coof!

Welcome to edition seven of Bontempi Radio Köln. A bumper D90 double-length edition this time (sorry for download size—it is worth it I promise!) as I’ll be away riding trains for the next month and won’t easily be able to fill the missing Bontempi gap when away. This ’cast contains a definite George Stephenson theme and is best listened to with your eyes peering out of the window on whatever journey you find yourself on, with your brain duly engaged in neutral. Unless you’re driving of course. Or there are kids opposite eating oranges and playing [insert name of latest japanese kids’ craze game here]. In which case turn it up even louder. It will scare them off.

Bontempi Radio Köln: Edition 06 | Jack yer’ Bontempi

Image of artwork for Bontempi Radio Köln Edition sixLong time coming…

Welcome to edition six of Bontempi Radio Köln. A long time coming but good things come to those who wait... This one mainly features early house, euro-beat, electro and hi-nrg cuts from the 80s. Tunes in the charts or discovered later that made me prick up my ears and stop listening to stadium rock. I've kept production to a minimum on this - it’s really just the tunes but I hope you enjoy the selection.

If you do — I thoroughly recommend seeking out some of the old WBMX Chicago Hot Mix Five sessions that can be easily be found on your p2p network of choice, fully capturing the birth of the modern DJ featuring legends like Farley Jackmaster Funk, Fast Eddie Fawlkes, Kenny Jammin Jason, Ralphie Rosario, Steve Silk Hurley, Julian Perez and Mickey Oliver. They did this sort of thing way, way better than me.

Perfect summer music. To dance to. Or listen on the bus.

Bontempi Radio Köln: Edition 04 | Guest Special with Alex H.

Image of artwork for Bontempi Radio Köln Edition fourWatch out! Alex H is in town

Only a week since the last BRK, but that’s probably because I barely had to lift a finger for this edition. Yes—Number Four is a guest mix by the ever-talented Alex H who heard BRK editions 1&2 and begged me to let him have a go*

*Not in fact entirely true; It's an honour...

Who is Alex H? He's a producer/DJ of note I just happen to work with who’s mashups and long-form mixes never fail to amuse or get your toes a-tappin’. He’s got an impressive back catalogue of bootlegs, original stuff and mixes to peruse: Get over to www.alexh.org to hear more!

But we digress; this 26 minute mix has been scalpelled together for your aural pleasure with some fantastic gobbets of unlikely soundtrack history, razor-sharp beats and breaks and (as if that wasn't enough) it even comes with a twist of hispanic hip-hop. It’a treat - if you haven’t subscribed yet… Why the delay?!?

Bontempi Radio Köln: Edition 02 | Sexy Synthesisers

Image of cover of Bontempi Radio podcast number 2Bontempi Radio Köln: Edition 02

And a bit different this time…
Yes indeed—I may have spent way too long polishing the details (chapters, beat matching, cover images), to make this the first ‘proper’ podcast after last week’s little experiment—but it's lined up to be a goody.

The selections on this one are sort of a glimpse inside my head during the mid-to-late eighties, with a few things added for spice that I've since discovered but would probably have loved then too had I known about them. I got a few deja-vu’s just making it. So jack in your phones and expect synthesisers, a little cheese and of course an ex-stockbroker from Switzerland rapping and shouting in a mockney accent!

There was an enhanced version in the .m4b format with chapters and images, but I’m currently experiencing problems with my provider not being able to properly host the files so it remains in .mp3 for the foreseeable future.
[EDIT: A very helpful person at Pipex gave me the heads-up on how I might sort this problem with mime-types so from now on (Sunday 19th Feb) it will indeed be enhanced. Yay!—I feel like a server-side genius making this work. It seemed just too easy!]

You can subscribe to the podcast via iTunes or RSS with one of the links in the ‘subscribe’ sidebar on the right—which means you'll get new podcasts from me automatically every time I make a new one. Hopefully this will be fortnightly or more often should time allow. If the iTunes or RSS links don't work for you, you can download the whole mix directly from the link below. If you’ve heard it and liked it - mail me at littlepixel(at)littlepixel.info or post a comment and let me know - or if you’re really moved—leave a review on iTunes...

Bontempi Radio Köln: Edition 01 | Testing... Testing... Is this on?

Image of cover of If everything worked this should be my first podcast post...

Woo! Pretty smart huh? It’s experimental, it’s 26minutes long and sadly yes—I’ve resorted to one of the Mac’s ‘Steven Hawking’ robot voices out of microphone shyness—but it’s early days ok? Made with Ableton, the tunes on it are erm a bit eclectic but for edition two, I promise to compile a Disco Electro Giorgio Yello treat. Won’t that be nice?

But for now either:
1) Get a proper RSS podcast subscription by pasting the feed url below into iTunes via the ‘Subscribe to Podcast’ advanced menu item and you should get new downloads automatically as-and-when I make new shows:

feed://feeds.feedburner.com/BontempiRadioKoln

2) Click here to launch the mp3 in a new window Or ctrl-click/right-click the link to save it to somewhere on your hard-disk.

Hope you enjoy them…
